Streaming FAQs

Listen Live Stream Fails to Launch

SOLUTION:

If you were referred to our support site then the stream you're trying to connect to is most likely using one of our many streaming products. The first step in solving your streaming issue is to determine if the stream you're trying to connect to requires the Abacast Client Software (Live or On-Demand) or if it's utilizing traditional streaming methods without any additional software/plug-in requirements.

To determine if the stream you're trying to connect to requires the Abacast Distributed Live or On-Demand Client Software please see the knowledgebase article "HOWTO: Determine if a stream requires Abacast Distributed Client Software"

Once you know if your stream requires the Abacast Client or not you can follow this general troubleshooting outline.

  1. For Streams that require the Abacast Client Software: Did the Abacast Client installation procedure indicate the Software was properly installed?
  2. Are you normally able to connect to the stream in question? If so the chances are there is a break in the connection between the streaming source (encoder) and Abacast's Streaming Servers. If the problem persists for more than 12-24 hours it may be appropriate to e-mail Abacast's Support to be sure they are aware of the problem. To do this choose "Open a Ticket".
  3. Be sure any hardware or software firewalls are allowing the Abacast Client to connect to the Internet
  4. Verify that there are no pop-up blocker dialogs indicating a pop-up window related to the site you're trying to stream from has been blocked. If a pop-up blocker is active you may need to "always allow" pop-up windows from certain streaming sites.
  5. Many sites that use the Abacast Client Software offer two streaming options: A high quality stream (that usually requires the software download) and a low quality stream that does not require any downloads. Try the low quality stream to see if it works. If the low quality stream does not work you may be having general issues with your media player application (Winamp, Windows Media Player, VLC, etc). If the LOW quality stream works (if one exists) but not the high quality please open a ticket with Abacast Support so that we can further troubleshoot the issue you're having.
  6. For Streams that require the Abacast Client Software: If you have Windows Firewall enabled be sure to choose to "Unblock" the Abacast Client when prompted by Windows.
  7. For Streams that require the Abacast Client Software: If in a corporate network check with your IT department to see if required ports are open. These are listed in KB article "What ports do I need open in able to connect to an Abacast Distributed Stream".
  8. For Streams that require the Abacast Client Software: The Abacast Client will create a log file indicating any errors that it received when connecting to a server. Sometimes it's useful to look at these to determine where the fault lies. Please review the knowledgebase article "Locating the Abacast Client error log".

Windows Media Player Keeps Buffering...

SOLUTION:

There are many factors that come into play when it comes to rebuffering problems. The most common are the following:

1) Your Internet connection is too slow to receive the stream. If you are on a dial-up connection this is most likely the cause. Most dial-up modems connect at a maximum of 49Kbps, depending on line noise and the quality of your ISP. There are some tweaks that you can try to increase the speed or improve the quality of your dial-up connection. Do a Google search for "tweaking dial-up connections" for more information. The only sure-fire way to reduce rebuffering problems is to upgrade to a broadband Internet Connection. (DSL or Cable are the most common)

2) Temporary Internet routing problems. Occasionally an Internet router(s) will temporarily become overloaded or malfunction. This can lead to Windows Media Player rebuffering. If you are on a broadband connection and usually receive a constant, uninterupted stream and start to experience rebuffering, this is most likely the case. Be patient. The problems should go away shortly.

How do I tune in on a Mac computer?

SOLUTION:

In most cases Abacast offers an alternate stream for Mac listeners. You will need to have Windows Media Player installed for your Mac. If you don't already have it installed please visit the links below.

Newer versions of MacOS may need to install the Flip4Mac plug-in for the QuickTime Player.
